You’ve seen the posts. People are quitting their 9-5 jobs and opting for simplified #vanlife instead. You love the idea but you’re not quite ready to hit send on that resignation email. Or maybe you are ready to take the leap but aren’t sure what the next step is.

I’m like you. I’m not an expert on the subject. But I am learning. And I want to share my successes and failures along the way, in hopes that they can help you on your own journey.

An open road, unlimited destinations, and no rent payments. People will tell us it’s a pipe dream, but I am determined to make it happen. If we can do it, so can you!

My interest in van life started in May of 2020 when Quentin and I rented a 1989 Volkswagen Westfalia for a long weekend. Her name was Frankie.

We drove from Denver to Buena Vista, Colorado, taking side roads and small highways to ensure that we didn’t exceed Frankie’s max speed of 65 mph. We found a secluded BLM camp site nestled in the San Juan mountains, perfectly situated between a sea of aspen trees and a calm creek. If you ever find yourself looking for a remote car camping spot in that area, type in these coordinates and don’t stop until you’ve reached the end of the road: 38.932 -107.05508.

On the first night we slept in the pop-up bed, because how could you pass up an opportunity to experience that novelty. But the pop-up became a storage area when we realized the lower fold-down bed was much more comfortable. We used the propane stove to make coffees in the morning and fill our bellies with warm grilled cheeses once the temperature started to drop. Finn learned to play frisbee within those few days. We took daily strolls along the creek and had campfires every night. I instantly saw the appeal in the freedom this lifestyle provides. That weekend and Frankie will forever hold a special place in my heart.
